Herman Verbaere: 'The Mourning Procession' - Lithograph - Belgium - 1950-1959

Beautiful lithograph entitled 'The Mourning Procession' by the world-famous Belgian painter and watercolorist Herman Verbaere (1906-1193), dated 1941, so a rare work by him during the war years. The lithograph shows a crowd accompanying a funeral procession through the village to the church. Signed and dated by the master at the bottom right.

Herman Verbaere was the eldest son of Leo Joseph Verbaere, printer-publisher in Wetteren. He was educated by Prosper Böss at the academy in Wetteren until 1924 and then at the Academy in Ghent, under the direction of Jan Frans De Boever and Oscar Coddron, where he obtained the title of laureate in 1933. He taught at the school Arts et Métiers in Ghent.

Verbaere made numerous watercolours, he painted landscapes of the Flemish villages along the Scheldt, on the coast, in Zeeland and in the Kempen. With his illustrations and posters of almost all world exhibitions, he achieved international recognition and various prizes. At the 1937 World Exhibition in Paris, he was awarded for his Flemish landscape posters. Between 1935 and 1967 he designed numerous posters for the NMBS and he designed a whole series of stamps between 1962 and 1970. He combined his remarkable brush skills with a solid layout of the pages and was also a gifted colourist.
