Henri Émile Benoît Matisse (Paris, December 31, 1869 – November 3, 1954) was a French visual artist. He was a draftsman, graphic artist and sculptor, but is best known as a painter. Matisse is widely regarded, along with Pablo Picasso, as one of the artists who best contributed to defining the revolutionary developments in the visual arts during the first decades of the twentieth century, responsible for important developments in painting and sculpture.
