Henri Michel Antoine Chapu: 'Joan of Arc in Domrèmy' - Patinated plaster - France - 1920-1939
Posthumously cast statue in patinated plaster entitled 'Joan of Arc in Domrémy' and signed by the French sculptor Henri Michel Antoine Chapu.
Henri Chapu (1833-1891) was a French sculptor in a modified Neoclassical tradition known for his use of allegory in his work. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris from 1849. After winning the Prix de Rome in 1855, he spent five years in Italy. The sculpture Jeanne d'Arc à Domrémy, in which Jeanne d'Arc is depicted as a shepherdess who listens to the “voice from heaven” that tells her that she will soon be captured, dates from 1871 (in plaster version) and is the best-known work from Chapu.
