A jacquard loom is a weaving machine equipped with a jacquard mechanism. This device was invented in 1804 by Joseph-Marie Jacquard, based on some earlier inventions. The jacquard looms made it possible to machine complex patterns such as brocade and damask. The technique makes it possible to weave larger designs by means of the harness cords that cannot be executed with shafts (groups of warp threads), such as intricately decorated and floral fabrics.
