Edgard Tytgat: 'Boulangerie' - Color woodcut - Belgium - 1944

Beautiful color woodcut by the Belgian master Edgard Tytgat (1879-1957) from 1944, titled 'Boulangerie'. Signed in the plate and (unclear) numbered. From the book 'En écoutant Toone jouer le Bossu'. Professionally framed.

Edgard Tytgat was a Belgian artist born in Brussels in 1879 and died in 1957 in Sint-Lambrechts-Woluwe. He was a painter, watercolorist, draftsman and woodcarver. Tytgat spent his childhood in Bruges where he became a lithographer in his father's studio in 1895. Enjoyed his further education at the Academy in Brussels. He lived in London during the First World War, from where he returned in 1920 to settle permanently in Brussels. Made his debut under the influence of Impressionism, but from 1920 he emerged as a printmaker and painter-storyteller. His sources of inspiration: scenes from everyday life, circus and fairground scenes, folklore, folk tales and fantasy.

His works are narrative and folksy and should be situated in the typical Brussels atmosphere. They bathe in an atmosphere of mischievousness, soft irony, playful eroticism, youthful daring, wisdom, poetry and dream. From 1940 to 1950 his palette evolved to a brighter color and the painting technique became looser. From then on he also found inspiration in religious subjects, heroic tragedies and anecdotal stories. Tytgat also illustrated numerous books. From 1923 he was a member of Kunst van Heden, De IX, Le Centaure and Sélection. From 1940 to 1957 he was director of the Free Atelier in Woluwe-Saint-Lambert. His works can be found, among others, in the MoMa in New York and in museums in Brussels, Ixelles, Antwerp, Ghent, Mons, Liège and Bruges. Mentioned in BAS I and Two Centuries signatures of Belgian artists. Status report: in good condition
