Jan Quintens: 'The Potato Harvesters' - Oil on canvas - Belgium - 1979
Expressionist, animated landscape painting of potato harvesters in a farmer's landscape. Signed and dated by the master and professionally framed.
Jan Quintens (Viversel-Zolder, 1917 -Hasselt, 2012) was, besides self-taught, one of the few priests who ventured into secular art. In his youth on Terlamen, Quintens often saw painters at work, such as Charles Wellens. After his priestly studies, however, he fell ill for a long time, time that he spent usefully learning to paint and etch. Became pastor in Termolen-Zonhoven from 1944 to 1959, while in his spare time he took lessons at the Academy of Genk and the Academy of Hasselt. Initially painted Kempen landscapes, but after his appointment in Rapertingen he also fell in love with the Haspengouw landscape (from 1959). Formed the artists group "Kempenmin" in the early 1950s with artists from the Zonhoven region (including Humberto Wouters).
