Guanyin jadeite statue - Green jadeite - China - 1900-1912

Particularly beautiful carved Chinese Guanyin statue in green jadeite. Mounted on a lacquered Chinese hardwood ship. Late Qing Dynasty (1636-1912) and last imperial dynasty in Chinese history

The statue depicts the goddess Guanyin (Kwanyin, Guanshiyin or Guanyin Pusa), the Chinese interpretation of the bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara. Guanyin is the goddess of compassion and the sea. In traditional Chinese religion, Taoism and Chinese Buddhism, Guanyin is especially invoked in prayers in times of danger. This image is a common image with a vase in the hands. This vase contains saving water and is poured onto the earth by her, saving people from danger.

Jadeite is found in metamorphic rocks formed under high pressure and relatively low temperature conditions. Jadeite is one of the minerals recognized in the gemstone jade.
