Désiré Félicien François Joseph Mercier (21 November 1851 in Braine-l'Alleud - 23 January 1926 in Brussels) was a Belgian philosopher, archbishop, metropolitan and cardinal. On February 7, 1906 he was appointed Archbishop of Mechelen and created cardinal in 1907. He remained archbishop until his death in 1926. He became known for his courageous attitude towards the Germans during the First World War. His pastoral letters, which expressed the resistance of the population against the German occupation, earned him great respect in his own country and among the Allies. After 1918 he showed more concern for national unity, on the basis of which he fought the demands of the Flemish Movement and, among other things, strongly opposed the Dutchization of education in Flanders, and in particular university education.
