Georges Dheedene: 'Plowing farm horses' - Oil on canvas - Belgium - 1930-1944

Particularly typical, large pre-war work by the Belgian painter Georges Dheedene (1909-1973) with a leading role for a pair of plowing farm horses in a rural scene. Signed by the master at the bottom right and beautifully framed in gilded oak.

Georges Dheedene (Zulte, 1909-1973), son of a café owner, trained as a painter at the Sint Lucas Institute in Ghent, where he was rewarded with a gold medal in 1933. Back in his native village of Zulte, he grew into a highly regarded painter of landscapes and portraits. Before the Second World War, his work, such as this one, mainly characterizes the toil in the countryside. After the war his work becomes more frivolous, optimistic and colorful. He died of a heart attack in 1973, but left behind a beautiful oeuvre of more than 2,000 works to enjoy forever.
